Stone Cleaning
Careful cleaning for monuments that have gathered dirt and discoloration, with the stone's original character kept.
Chapter 01
Why monuments darken over the years
A monument stands outdoors through every season. Dust and dirt settle into the surface, rain carries grime into the small pits of the stone, and in time the face takes on a dull, uneven tone that is not how it looked on the day it was set. Dirt and discoloration are the most common reasons a family notices that a stone no longer looks as it used to.
The change is gradual, so it is easy to miss until a visit when the lettering is harder to read than you remember. Discoloration can also hide the contrast between polished and carved areas, which is what makes an inscription legible in the first place.
Stone cleaning is a real, if smaller, part of what Gray Stone Monument does for families in Sacramento and the surrounding area. It is worth treating as careful work on something that cannot be replaced, not as a quick wash.

Cleaning that keeps the stone's character
The risk in cleaning an old monument is doing too much. Harsh cleaners and wire brushes can scratch a polished face or etch marble, and a surface that has been scoured never quite returns to the way it was. The aim is a cleaner stone, not a different one.
One customer, Everton Troutman, wrote on our reviews page that after our work the monument looked “almost like new again without losing its original character.” That phrase is the standard we hold ourselves to. A family should recognize the stone they remember, only clearer.
Because stones differ in material, age and finish, we look at each one before deciding how to approach it. Granite and marble do not tolerate the same treatment, and a stone with fine carved detail asks for more patience than a plain slab.
Chapter 03
When it is worth getting in touch
A good time to ask about cleaning is when a stone no longer reads clearly from a short distance, or when the surface looks darker or blotchy compared with the stones around it. Many families also think of it before a visit that matters to them, or before a final date is added, so the new lettering sits on a clean face.
If you are not sure whether a stone needs attention, describe it to us. You can call (916) 300-5785 or email us, and we can arrange for you to share a photo. Our office is open Monday to Friday, 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM, and we serve Sacramento, Elk Grove and the surrounding area.
There is no need to decide on anything in advance. We will tell you plainly what we see in the photo and what we would want to look at in person, and you can take your time from there.
