Gravestones & Monuments

Timeless, durable cemetery memorials: upright gravestones, companion monuments and family estate markers, built on reinforced foundations.

Chapter 01

Classic upright memorials

An upright gravestone is the memorial most people picture first: a stone that stands on its own, with the name carried at a height where it can be seen across a section of the cemetery. We build these in granite and marble, with carved lettering cut for strong contrast against the face of the stone.

Color is a real decision here. Our granite comes in blue, grey and traditional tones, and the right one depends on the setting, the other stones nearby and what the family wants it to feel like when they visit. Marble offers a different, softer character. We talk through the options with you in plain terms, and walk you through each one so the process never feels like too much at a difficult time.

Gray Stone Monument designs for families across Greater Sacramento, and every cemetery sets its own rules for the size, material and placement of an upright stone. We design to the specifications of the cemetery where the monument will stand, so the stone you choose is one that can actually be set there.

Companion and family monuments

A monument for two people, or for several generations, is a different design problem from a single stone. Double plots call for a companion monument that reads as one piece while honoring each person equally. Family plots call for a face, or a set of faces, that can hold many names across many years.

The detail that is most easily missed is the room still to come. If a companion monument is lettered edge to edge on the first day, there is nowhere to add the second name and date later. We plan the face so that space is left where future names and dates belong, and so that the added lettering will sit comfortably beside what is already there.

Some families also ask for a shape with meaning, such as joined hearts or a carved emblem. We can design around that too, and we show you the layout before any cutting begins. Call (916) 300-5785 to talk through a companion or family monument for a Sacramento-area plot.

Chapter 03

The foundation under the stone

Most of what protects a monument is the part nobody sees. A heavy upright set on a base that was never planned can settle unevenly, and over the years it may lean or shift. That is a quiet failure, and by the time it is visible it is a harder one to put right.

That is why foundation planning is part of the work from the start, not an afterthought at installation. We plan sturdy base foundations and the structural mounting of the stone together, with the weight and size of the monument in mind, and with the cemetery's own requirements for foundations and setting taken into account. Our upright gravestones, companion monuments and family estate markers are built on reinforced foundations to hold up over time.

For a family, this means the memorial you choose today is meant to stand straight and steady for the long years ahead. When you arrange a consultation, ask us how we would plan the base for the stone you have in mind, and we will explain it plainly.
